Carer's policy
At Personal Group, we recognise the challenges that carers face when balancing work with their caring responsibilities. Our Carer’s Policy is designed to support employees who provide care for a dependant with a long-term care need, ensuring they have the flexibility and support needed to manage both their work and personal commitments.
Who is a Carer?
A carer is someone who provides care, assistance, and support to a dependant who is seriously ill or unable to care for themselves. This could include a spouse, civil partner, child, parent, or another individual who reasonably relies on them for care. Carers may assist with personal care, mobility, medication management, household tasks, financial matters, or emotional support.
Entitlement to Carer’s Leave
From day one of employment, Personal Group employees are entitled to take up to one week of Carer’s Leave per 12-month rolling period to provide or arrange care for a dependant with a long-term care need. This leave can be taken as a full week, individual days, or half-days.
A long-term care need includes:
- A physical or mental illness or injury requiring care for more than three months.
- A condition classified as a disability under the Equality Act 2010.
- A requirement for care due to old age.
Carer’s Leave is separate from general childcare unless the child meets the criteria of a dependant with a long-term care need.
Pay During Carer’s Leave
While there is no statutory right to paid Carer’s Leave, Personal Group provides up to five days of paid leave per year to support employees with caring responsibilities. This entitlement is pro-rata for part-time employees, and all other benefits remain in place.
How to Request Carer’s Leave
Employees must submit a Carer’s Leave Request Form through our HR system and seek approval from their line manager. We ask for as much notice as possible, with a minimum requirement of either twice the number of leave days requested or three days, whichever is shorter.
