In any company, communication can be tricky- especially when it comes to an agile or remote workforce. For many industries the additional challenge is creating a communication and engagement strategy for those employees who are harder to reach, those employees that work irregular hours, are based offsite or might not be sat in front of a computer screen.
So, what can be done to improve communication for today’s agile workforces?
Focusing too heavily on one method of communication can end up leaving large sections of the workforce out of the loop. To ensure that all staff members are being reached by your communications, you should consider the makeup of your workforce, and the way that they would like to be communicated with. With larger workforces, it’s not possible to speak to each staff member face to face, so sending out a pulse survey might be the easiest way to make sure that everyone is able to have their say.
Utilise Peer to Peer
Team members who socialise with each other tend to communicate better, and internal communication within departments or even between employees is crucial. As socialisation in a physical sense might not be possible for remote workers, or those who work wildly differing shifts, more creative ways to keep in touch will be necessary.
An online space to communicate informally will help them to establish a sense of community, understand each other’s communication styles and foster good teamwork. This also allows for them to disseminate information that might have been missed by other staff members.
Personal Group have recently helped Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust integrate their new internal communications system into Hapi, our bespoke employee experience platform and app. This means that their internal comms is now accessible to all employees, both in and out of work, whenever and wherever they are. Our 50-strong engagement team act as an extension to your benefits team, visiting each location and helping employees make the most of the employee services and benefits that your business can provide.
The system is quick and easy to use and can accessed from the employee’s mobile phones or computers. Hapi also houses information on their entire benefits offering, which allows for quick and seamless employee experience.
Communicating with today’s workforce can be difficult, but with the help of technology and peer to peer assistance employers may find that the task isn’t as daunting as it first appears.
